The students who want to apply to Route 2 and Route 3 studies of \u201cUnknown\/rarely known Anatolian routes project\u201d 2015 summer period are expected to write a proposal about their contribution to this project and to answer the question \u201cWhy me?\u201d The exact working plan and period will be determined together with the team of students whose proposals are accepted. The proposals will be evaluated by me and my team mates. For the project \u201cExploring routes that have a story\u201d thestudents have to apply on behalf of their Cycling Club. It might increase with the donations till August 1st which also depends on how far I\u2019ll ride) (My support page)<\/li>\n<li>The income from the sales of Iron Men dessert at Ankara Damla Patisserie for one year (This dessert is baked for this project by Bahadir Duman)<\/li>\n<li>Four bicycles from Gungorler Bisiklet<\/li>\n<li>Two Husky Bizam-3 tents from Gurkan Genc Scholarship<\/li>\n<li>One week free holiday at Ahmet Alacam\u2019s sea side camping place at the project end.<\/li>\n<li>The gear and financial support will be delivered to my team mate and the project coordinator Nuzhet Turker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Young Explorers Project<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gurkan Genc\u2019s \u201cYoung Explorers\u201d project is a comprehensive project searching and presenting unknown\/rarely known Anatolian routes and also routes having a story through supporting the work of young Turkish cyclists, mainly university students.<\/p>\n<h4>A. Unknown\/rarely known Anatolian routes<\/h4>\n<p>The three years project \u201c Lycaonia \u2013 Cilicia Birota routes\u201d is a part of the unknown\/rarely known Anatolian routes project announced by \u201cYoung Explorers\u201d. Its aim is to re-discover rarely known (or forgotten) old Roman roads connecting Karaman to Mersin. In this project Turkish university students from different regions will take part. Among the proposed routes Route 1 and Route 2 were explored by the members of Cukurova University\/Adana Bicycle Team in August 2014. Their first hand impressions have been shared on my web page under the headings \u201cRiding through history\u201d and \u201cIn the footsteps of nomads\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gurkangenc.com\/en\/routes\">http:\/\/www.gurkangenc.com\/en\/routes<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brief introduction of the project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project routes are based on old Roman roads (mentioned in the Peutinger map) connecting inner Anatolia to Mediterranean coast traversing Bolkarlar mountains part of the Taurus range. The Romans established roads to the remotest places they occupied in order to keep the territories they occupied under control. Also, Anatolia was webbed with such roads. These roads were of importance for commercial and military purposes during antique period and also during the spread of early Christianity. An important portion of these roads have become the infrastructure of the modern roads. While some are still used locally, the remaining roads have mostly been forgotten or are rarely known. Many of these routes coincide with the routes of the migrating nomads.<\/p>\n<p>One of the four main roads connecting Iconium (Konya) to Pompeipolis (Mersin) an important city of antique period mentioned in the Peutinger Map is the road which traverses through Ad Fines (presumably Dedeli plateau) and Tetrapygia (Kemer plateau). [This road is mostly forgotten and main part of this presently dirt road is used by the migrating nomads]. The first stop of this road is Laranda (Karaman) which was an important road junction during antique period. From here there are four roads reaching Mediterranean cost.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Karaman \u2013 Bucakkisla \u2013 Ermenek<\/li>\n<li>Karaman \u2013 Sertavul pass \u2013 Mut (Klaudiupolis) \u2013 Silifke (Selukeia) [Nowadays the modern Silifke-Karaman road]<\/li>\n<li>Karaman \u2013 Magara (Kirobasi) \u2013 Uzuncaburc (Diokaisareia) \u2013 Silifke [Nowadays partly paved side road connecting villages]<\/li>\n<li>Karaman \u2013 Yesildere (Ibrala) \u2013 Taskale (Manazan) \u2013 Buyukkoras \u2013 Kucukkoras [The old Roman road from Eregli (Heraklia) to Magara (Kirobasi) through Divle and Percin pass crosses at Kucukkoras with this road. This paved road a short cut between Ayranci and Mersin is used regionally]\u2013Ad Fines (Dedeli plateau)\u2013Tetrapyrgia (Kemer plateau)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Route 1 and Route 2<\/p>\n<p>Supported by \u201cYoung Explorers\u201d project, the GPS coordinates of Route 1 [Huyuk plateau \u2013 Berendi \u2013 Taskale \u2013 Dagpazari (Koropissos) \u2013 Alahan Monastry] and Route 2 [Gozne \u2013 Kizilkaya \u2013 Topasir \u2013 Huyuk plateau \u2013 Kikpinar plateau \u2013 Sari lake \u2013 Akrep \u2013 Yazi lake \u2013 Ala lake \u2013 Karatas] was recorded during August \u2013 September 2014 riding through both routes. Works on both routes are in progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Route 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study area of 2015 summer period is the old Roman road starting from Karaman through Tetrapyrgia. This Roman road forks at Tetrapyrgia.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Tetrapyrgia \u2013 Arslankoy [Efrenk] \u2013 Findikpinari \u2013 Kuzucubelen \u2013 Mersin [<em>This route interconnects mountain villages of Mersin along which are many medieval fortresses<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Tetrapyrgia \u2013 Dumbelek pass \u2013 Tirtar \u2013 Yavca \u2013 Yenikoy \u2013 Belenkeslik \u2013 Mersin or T\u0131rtar \u2013 Evcili \u2013 Gozne \u2013 Mersin [<em>This route interconnects mountain villages of Mersin along which are many medieval fortresses<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Tetrapyrgia \u2013 Sorgun \u2013 Avgadi (Aydinlar) \u2013 Koramsali \u2013 Arslanli \u2013 Bozburun (Kayaci) \u2013 Cet Tepe \u2013 Erdemli (Kalanthia) [<em>This route interconnects mountain villages of Mersin along which are many Cilician city remains<\/em>]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Route 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another route which will also be studied during 2015 summer period is partly following the route called \u201cFootsteps of Olba princess. It follows: Karaman \u2013 Magara \u2013 Uzuncaburc [Diocaesarea] \u2013 Olba \u2013 Kizkalesi (Korykos) \u2013 Mersin [Pompeipolis]<\/p>\n<p>Routes 5, 6 and 7 will be studied during 2016 and 2017 summer periods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Route 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Magara \u2013 Musurdum well \u2013 Hacpinar canyon \u2013 Sultan plateau \u2013 Goedet \u2013 Meyil mountain \u2013 Kizilcesme \u2013 Karaman [<em>This route follows partly the road called after English Said Pasha (1882) governor of Konya<\/em>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Route 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Old Roman road following the route Konya \u2013 Gokyurt \u2013 Ermenek [migration route of Sar\u0131ke\u00e7ili nomads]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Route 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Old Roman road following the route Konya \u2013 Karaman \u2013 Bucakkisla \u2013 Ermenek [<em>migration route of Sar\u0131ke\u00e7ili nomads<\/em>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>B. Exploring routes having a story<\/h4>\n<p>In this frame the students are expected to submit a proposal describing the route having a story on behalf of the Cycling Club of the university they study. A route might have a story covering a sociological phenomenon, historical happening, an archaeological site, animal migrations, endemic plants, a geological happening, a geographical site etc.<\/p>\n<p>The project proposals are to be presented at the \u201cYoung Explorers Anatolian Bicycle Festival\u201d which will be held each year.
