The entrance <\/span>procedure <\/span>to Panama was different compared to that of all the other countries I entered so far. Panama was the second country I entered during the <\/span>outbreak<\/span> period but was the first after a year. Let\u2019s list the countries I exited taking a flight and the reason:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>UK \u2013 Spain (Island country, there is<\/span> a<\/span> sea in between) <\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>Tunisia \u2013 Israel (Civil wars in Libya and Egypt)<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>Bahrein \u2013 Qatar (Island country, there is sea in between)<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>Oman \u2013 Ethiopia (Actually I intended to pass <\/span>through<\/span> Yemen but <\/span>there was civil war. \u00a0T<\/span>he Red Sea in between)<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>South Africa \u2013 Argentina <\/span>(<\/span>Atlantic Ocean in between)<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>Colombia \u2013 Panama (Actually there is an unofficial road without passport control but we cannot use it<\/span>). What I learned <\/span>from the Colombian and Panamanian officials and folk: That region is under the control of <\/span>drug <\/span>cartels where narcotics are produced and human trafficking is done. Furthermore, it is s<\/span>aid that the animals habiting<\/span> the tropics ar<\/span>e dangerous but not as much as the human <\/span>being him\/herself! Therefore, there is not an official road connecting these countries and <\/span>so also<\/span> not a border gate.<\/span><\/div>\n

In short, <\/span>I don\u2019t use other transport vehicles but bicycle if I\u2019m not obliged to. I\u2019m continuing my world tour only on bike and the last 10 years nothing happened to disturb my idealistic behavior. I had stated at the beginning of my world tour that I\u2019ll not use a transport vehicle other than bicycle unless I\u2019m not obliged to!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Before I start to my journey in Panam<\/span>a, first let me expand what I mentioned <\/span>above. What I\u2019ll write are my own <\/span>arguments resulting from my<\/span> own<\/span> observations and reading<\/span>s. Well, what <\/span>are we talking<\/span> about<\/span> in the 21<\/span>st<\/span> century,<\/span>impossibility to control <\/span>wild (!!) animal<\/span>s, drug<\/span> cartel<\/span>s, <\/span>human trafficking? The region between Panama and Colombia is called Dairen<\/span> Gap<\/span>. Well, all <\/span>what I counted is present (wild animal, drug cartels, human trafficking) <\/span>but to put to end is only a matter of will of the giant <\/span>world<\/span> companies, <\/span>a matter of <\/span>just a finger snap. Why that finger is not snapped till now?! <\/span>J<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In 1974 a high way project was <\/span>run<\/span> with 50 million USD budget. More than 50000 companies were specified to be established in this region. Then number of town<\/span>s<\/span> to be established were specified. Also, the diversity<\/span> of agricultural products<\/span>, the amount of investment on fishing industry, etc. etc. all were specified. The due date was 1978. Who was expected to fund this <\/span>project? EU? No, of course USA was asked for funding. Panama doesn\u2019t own such a budget to fund this project. Well, what about the income <\/span>from the Panama Canal?<\/span> 36% of the canal income flows <\/span>in<\/span>to the country <\/span>which<\/span> has a significant impact on the country\u2019s economy. But <\/span>Panama does not own the C<\/span>anal and is not allowed to use the money according to its own\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The owner of the Panama Canal is USA! It\u2019s a property of USA with its<\/span> own commission, <\/span>ambassador, engineers, financiering. Let me tell you this way, Panama Canal brings 3 billiard USD in<\/span>come<\/span> per year. About 1 billiard <\/span>USD is transferred to Ministry of T<\/span>reasury of Panama (actually how much money is transferred to the treasury and how it is used is a matter of question, this is Latin America<\/span> here<\/span>). I\u2019ll just say \u201cyeah, sure\u201d to the statement \u201cthe Panama Canal is owned by Panama\u201d!<\/span> What is produced in Central America, particularly in Panama<\/span>,<\/span> which significantly contribute<\/span>s<\/span> to the economics? Who is supporting the regular production of<\/span> the goods if <\/span>there are any? Whose goods will be transferred to where if the roads are <\/span>to be <\/span>constructed? Which countries in North America have industrial <\/span>economic structure<\/span>, USA and Canada. Well, aren\u2019t those countries importing raw materials from South America? The <\/span>countries<\/span> who will use th<\/span>e constructed roads, directly or indirectly, will be the same<\/span> countries actually. So, those countries will benefit from t<\/span>he project. T<\/span>hey will still benefit spending a budget of 100 million USD<\/span> instead of 50 million USD<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whic<\/span>h countries own the <\/span>mines? USA and Canada, in other word<\/span>s<\/span> the companies centered <\/span>in these countries<\/span>. Let\u2019s take a look to over ground, vegetables, fruits, t<\/span>he land belongs to foreign <\/span>corporations. The coffee plantations in South America are very important. For example, Colombia has 40 billion USD income per year from coffee export. Unfortunately, this process is threatened by climate change. And also cocaine pr<\/span>oduction. Cocaine is produced<\/span> particularly<\/span> in<\/span> Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. Just to remind, please and please don\u2019t call people visiting Colombia as Escobar, Escobar. Well, also I don\u2019t understand <\/span>why visitors talk about this man. Let\u2019s empathiz<\/span>e<\/span>. If friends of a visitor going to Turkey say: \u201cVisit the priso<\/span>n were Abdullah Ocalan (leader of PKK) is put in<\/span>, talk to his relatives.\u201d Would you like this? Why do you talk about and celebrate <\/span>a ma<\/span>n who kill<\/span>ed innocent people! I just do<\/span>n\u2019t understand the Escobar passion in my country!<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, some part of the cocaine production is done in Dairen <\/span>Gap region. The sea transportati<\/span>on is easy from here. So, would they give this nice area<\/span> over to anybody<\/span>? Another prod<\/span>u<\/span>ction area is the Amazonas region between Brazil and Colombia. It is estimated that Colombia has a 10 bill<\/span>ion USD income per year due to c<\/span>ocain<\/span>e production<\/span>. <\/span>This amount of many would enrich many countries. Well, <\/span>would they built a main<\/span> road<\/span> open to everyone<\/span> through this<\/span> production area? <\/span>On the other side, the money income f<\/span>rom cocain<\/span>e<\/span> needs to be integrated in<\/span>to<\/span> the system<\/span> and you cannot do<\/span> it with a grocery. <\/span>In short, to <\/span>change the production area where<\/span> such a high <\/span>amount of USD income is ready and the wheel turn<\/span>s<\/span>, why to derange? For these reasons, a road won\u2019t be constructed through this area. But if some day it becomes impossible to grow coca leaves in this region due to climate change, well then the two countries will be connected by a road. <\/span>A sham-<\/span>fight let\u2019s say, everyone <\/span>blinks<\/span>at this situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to <\/span>Covid<\/span> outbreak,<\/span> the regulations at the borders change at certain<\/span> intervals. The same happened at the <\/span>Panama<\/span> border. Just before entering the country, <\/span>a new regulation was effectuated. <\/span>Now, a<\/span>t the entrance to the country a new PCR test is required.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had taken<\/span> a PCR test <\/span>in Columbia 2 days before my fl<\/span>ight. <\/span>Arriving at the airport in Panama, before passport control we were dir<\/span>ected to the PCR testing area where counters were established. It was very c<\/span>r<\/span>o<\/span>wded. I had to wait for 45<\/span> minutes. While waiting in the queue<\/span> I used the time to <\/span>guess <\/span>the nationalities of the pass<\/span>e<\/span>nger<\/span>s waiting in the line<\/span>. Mostly<\/span> people coming from South America, Africa and Asia. There weren\u2019t any North Americans or Europeans in the que<\/span>ue. The price of the PCR test is<\/span> 85 USD, I had paid only 50 USD for the same test in Columbia just before boar<\/span>ding<\/span> the plane. I thought the test results would be sent to the hotel I\u2019m going to stay at because at the border I was ask<\/span>ed<\/span> to give the hotel address. \u00a0But this was not the case! I had to wait in the transit are<\/span>a<\/span> for 2 hours for the test result. The result was negative and I thought: \u201cWell, at the end, it is already 6 p.m. Now, I can go to the hotel and rest.\u201d But <\/span>resting<\/span> in the hotel room<\/span> was just a dream<\/span>, everybody arriving <\/span>in t<\/span>his country for touristic visit were gathered at the main hall. We were told that they will <\/span>take us to a hotel where we would to stay in<\/span> quarantine. Really interesting!<\/span><\/p>\n

As you were going to put us in quarantine anyhow, even though were all had bordered the plane with negative PCR test results, <\/span>why didn\u2019t <\/span>you <\/span>do it as soon as we entered the<\/span> country? Why did we have to wai<\/span>t for 2 hours at the airport for nothing? You could tak<\/span>e the PCR test at the quarantine<\/span> area.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were lodged for 4 days in a hotel near city center. It wa<\/span>s very boring and I had a headach<\/span>e<\/span> due to just staying inactive. I can\u2019t stand so much immobility for long time. My headach<\/span>e<\/span> disappeared as soon as I <\/span>jumped<\/span> on <\/span>my <\/span>bike. Before leaving the hotel I had to take another PCR test and only after the negative result they released me. Three PCR tests within 2 weeks, I could just spit! I paid 150 USD for bicycle<\/span> transport<\/span> on plane, 250 USD for C<\/span>o<\/span>lombia-Panama <\/span>flight <\/span>ticket <\/span>and 220 USD for the PCR tests. This bloody <\/span>course<\/span> between two neighbor countries cost me 620 USD.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, after this adventure I managed to go out with <\/span>my bicycle. In those 4 days I as<\/span>sembled my bike ready to set off. I also noticed the problem on the <\/span>front derailleur. Actually, this derailleur was troublesome from the first day on. It didn\u2019t function properly the first day but then after some tinker with<\/span>,<\/span> I managed <\/span>it to activate<\/span>. We talked about this with <\/span>Yasin<\/span>, e<\/span>ven we have a funny memory. <\/span>There are two chain<\/span> ring<\/span>s on crank but this bicycle has only<\/span> one shift lever. How come? <\/span>I c<\/span>hecked inside<\/span> the<\/span> box but couldn\u2019t find it. I asked <\/span>Yasin<\/span> where the other s<\/span>hift lever is, but he also didn\u2019t kno<\/span>w. We couldn\u2019t figure out how <\/span>this lever functioned<\/span>. Anyway, after talking to Shimano the situation cleared out. This was a one shift lever system. After <\/span>ass<\/span>embling the bicycle in Panama this shift lever system didn\u2019t function. I thought first to go to the hotel and then fix it there. At the hotel I realized that a plastic piece inside the shift lever was broken. I took it to the Shimano<\/span> service, they told me the same,<\/span> it was broken. <\/span>It would take months to recei<\/span>ve the order, so nothing t<\/span>o do, I\u2019ll continue to travel through<\/span> Panama till Costa Rica with this broken shift lever. If I find a bike repair shop in Costa Rica or somewhere on the road, I\u2019ll reduce the chain ring to one on crank and change the rear ca<\/span>s<\/span>sette system to 11-50 or above to cut-out the front derailleur.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m staying at Eden\u2019s<\/span> Garden, a hostel situated at a<\/span> good neighborhood of<\/span> the city. \u00a0Due to the outbreak, the <\/span>hostel rooms are not so crowded. 4 people are allowed to stay at a<\/span>n<\/span> 8 people<\/span> room. \u00a0The prices are somewhat high<\/span>er. I paid 16 USD for a 4 people<\/span> room<\/span>,<\/span> breakfast included (June 2021). In this neighborhood I could go out at night and walk to <\/span>entertainment locations<\/span> around.<\/span> For the<\/span> last two days, I checked out form the hostel and checked in a hotel at the city center 8 km away from the hostel. This time I paid 20 USD for a single room, breakfast not included.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is unreasonable to walk around on the streets at night. In this neig<\/span>h<\/span>borhood, though police <\/span>is<\/span> present <\/span>everywhe<\/span>re, there are deserted areas where<\/span> there is nobody on the street, nobody. How come I know this? I walked at night. Though Panama seems a secure country, I don\u2019t advice you to walk at night on streets at city center and <\/span>its <\/span>surroundings.<\/span><\/p>\n

I met <\/span>Nergis<\/span> working at UN and assigned to<\/span> Panama thanks to my friend <\/span>Bari<\/span>s<\/span> living i<\/span>n USA. During this short period, <\/span>we <\/span>attended a Bicycle Day held on Sunday<\/span> and had dinner in various restaurants at <\/span>all the <\/span>3 nights<\/span> we were together<\/span>. Due to <\/span>outbreak<\/span>, the restaurants were almost empt<\/span>y<\/span>. Also, during the period I was in Panama, there was lockdown after 10 p.m. The<\/span> Panama Channel Museu<\/span>m located in the old town was the only museum open during this period. Besides this, I couldn\u2019t meet with Felipe<\/span> since he caught Covid-19 virus<\/span>, the leader of one of the bicycle groups in the country with whom I wanted to ride<\/span><\/p>\n

I met Pamela, a triathlon athlete and her husband and had the opportunity to go out<\/span> with them <\/span>one night. They both are athletes but Pamela is a professional. Her sponsor is her husband Juan. The whole<\/span> country is suitable for cycling<\/span>, running and swimming. Therefore, triath<\/span>lon <\/span>is one of the favorite sports in this country. Furthermore, Juan and Pamela<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s dream was to make a cycling tour in Spain like I was doing. They are Colombian but did not come to a thought to do a similar cy<\/span>cling tour in their country.<\/span> I think their country is worth for such a travel but they don\u2019t feel <\/span>safe in <\/span>their country. What can I say? <\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span>Two bomb vehicles exploded in the city center of Cucuta which I <\/span>had <\/span>passed through one month ago. I witnessed what happened due to internal disorders in the country. \u00a0Colombia a beautiful country, but I can\u2019t say that you will stay safe when you travel in your country. Well, <\/span>no one can guarantee you stay safe, maybe something ba<\/span>d <\/span>can <\/span>happen when they are in Spain. But, this <\/span>is <\/span>also a reality Spain is a much safer country compared to Colombia.<\/span><\/div>\n

Beginning\/Entrance, <\/span>Panama city<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start to ride before I stay more in the city environment. My first <\/span>destination is Colon at the east of the country. Panama City is at the Pacific en<\/span>d and Colon is <\/span>at the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Beginning\/Entrance, Colon<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been watching the Panama and Suez Canals on the TV\u2019s since hour childhood. Panama Canal enables the goods transport from the west coast of USA to the east coast of South America, Europe and Africa and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Why did I mention<\/span> the USA as the base country for Panama Canal? Because the Panama Canal is <\/span>a <\/span>sole American production, constructed for the American goods to reach the world market.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I first saw the Can<\/span>al from the entrance of Panama City but didn\u2019t recognize<\/span> much. You need to <\/span>se<\/span>e it<\/span> from the second bridge. \u201cDude, how come it is handmade, what an insane project?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

I<\/span>\u2019m not going to write<\/span> how this P<\/span>anama Canal was constructed step<\/span> b<\/span>y<\/span> step, you may find enough detailed information on Google. What caught my attention was that first th<\/span>e French engineers started to dig<\/span>. But then, economic troubles in Europe before the First World War and after that the war itself hindered the French from continuing, an<\/span>d the USA hadn\u2019t seized the oppo<\/span>rtunity.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are cities at both ends of the Canal. <\/span>Panama City of the Pac<\/span>ific side and Colon on the Atlanti<\/span>c side. Both cities completely <\/span>differ fro<\/span>m<\/span> each other. I thought to ride in a day from one coast to the other, starting the day at <\/span>the <\/span>Pacific coast in the morning and ending at the Atlantic cost in the evening. A road just 90 km l<\/span>ong. But I must admit that it was<\/span> not so pleasant to ride on. <\/span>The road is packed with trucks and half of the road is without shoulder.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, I arrived in Colon and my first response was \u201cDude, wh<\/span>at a town<\/span>?\u201d \u201cWhat a contrast, the two ends of this country have a completely different look and population. <\/span>I had read the memori<\/span>es of some cyclists about Colon<\/span>. Entering the city center you directly feel that something i<\/span>s wrong. In this city, my defens<\/span>e mechanism directly took over as happened<\/span> before<\/span> in some African towns. My radar s<\/span>creen and visual perception opened immediately which was inactive<\/span> for the last 4 years. At those moments, I recognize the license plates of the moto<\/span>r<\/span>cycles passing by or <\/span>slow moving cars and check the<\/span>ir<\/span> drivers and passengers. I look at trousers an<\/span>d shoes of the motorcyclists, at the people standing in the<\/span> corners or at the clothes of the people looking at me while talking to each other. I look at the GPS before leaving the main street and rejoin after riding two blocks on side streets, at the same time check whether a car follows me, and some other details. What I\u2019m doing is not paranoia but just precautions (let<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s say life experience). I know that 4 cyclists were robbed in this city. On top of it, one was robbed during<\/span> day time and he complained that<\/span> the police didn\u2019t help. I\u2019ll ride to the end of the city, in any case. I recognize the eyes looking at my bicycle while riding to<\/span>w<\/span>ards the end of the city. I started to enter the side <\/span>streets and started to do zigzag<\/span>s towards the beach. Arriving at <\/span>the beach I found a relative quiet place and recorded a video<\/span>. After having some rest, <\/span>I started to ride to a hotel in the city center. The outside of the hotel <\/span>was nice, oppos<\/span>ing the city appearance. As I was about to enter the hotel a security came out.<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Bicycle<\/span>s<\/span> are not allowed inside. Park your bicycle over there at the open <\/span>air <\/span>area.<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Over there where the junk cars are?<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Yes, over there<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Are you kidding? I came to stay at the hotel and my bike will stay with me at the hotel room. <\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>No, I can\u2019t let the bicycle in. <\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Alright then I don\u2019t stay either. <\/span><\/p>\n

Look this guy is not a receptionist nor the owner of this hotel. He is the security staying at the entrance. If you are good in your job you would check my bags for bombs or weapons and <\/span>I wouldn\u2019t say anything. But, as<\/span> you see he was an as<\/span>s<\/span>hole.<\/span><\/p>\n

I moved a 100 meters, just to<\/span> find a place before the rain, a man block<\/span>ed<\/span> my way.<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Hi, you must be new i<\/span>n the town. You are crossing this<\/span> place for the 3rd time. Don\u2019t record videos with your camera, I advise you to exit this city not taking a single photo. Don\u2019t trust the police, don\u2019t trust anyone in this ci<\/span>ty. You\u2019ll find a place to stay <\/span>outside the city, and also don\u2019t look at any hostels…<\/span><\/p>\n

– Wow… thank y<\/span>ou. Is this city that dangerous?<\/span> (by the way I\u2019m not trusting this man either and I am on the alert looking around if there is someone else)<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Yes, this city is dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n

-Well, thank you again<\/span><\/p>\n

Never before had<\/span> anyone warned<\/span> me like this in a town. I need to find a safe place outside the city before it starts raining. Let<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s continue towards the bridge, tomorrow I\u2019ll anyway cross the bridge to complete my Canal tour. I get permission to camp inside the garage of a police station in a small town called Margarita<\/span>. :<\/span> ). That\u2019s a good one. I didn\u2019t need to pay and on top of it found a safe place to stay at.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next day I\u2019m at the exit of the Canal on the Atlantic coast. <\/span>Wuhuu<\/span>, from here you can see the most spectacular view of the Panama Canal. After crossing the bridge, you can see the <\/span>canal lock. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are two entrances or exits on <\/span>the canal. Canal locks were<\/span> constructed for large and small ships. <\/span>I saw similar lock<\/span>s<\/span> in the Netherlands and Germany, of course in much smaller size. Today is father\u2019s day and I met many cyclist<\/span>s on the other side of the bridge<\/span>. They were celebrating father\u2019s day on bike<\/span>s<\/span>. They gave<\/span> me<\/span> some drink and we shortly chatted. By the way they also celebrated my father\u2019s day though I\u2019m not a father yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is possible to make a c<\/span>omplete tour around the Panama C<\/span>anal but only with mountain bik<\/span>e. After a while the roads turn<\/span> into a rocky and red<\/span>–<\/span>sandy road. Also, it<\/span> is not advisable<\/span> to make this tour during the rainy season. I almost lost my bike in the mud. After a while I stopped to ride because the tires were<\/span> no longer gra<\/span>bbing the road starting <\/span>to slip. Inside the national park there is <\/span>a <\/span>school for the indigenous and I could easily camp inside the school as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as I pitched my tent it started to rain, raining like<\/span> cats and dogs. I really got a<\/span>fraid, either the roof <\/span>will collapse<\/span> or the wind <\/span>will blow<\/span> my tent. The heavy rain didn\u2019t stop till the nex<\/span>t<\/span> morning. Occasionally I woke up to check if the tent and surroundings is still dry. Some years ago I faced a bad experience <\/span>(Botswana memories)<\/span><\/a>which I never want to experience again. Due to the rain, I didn\u2019t set o<\/span>ff the next day. Luckily, I have enough<\/span> food and water.<\/span> The day after I\u2019ll <\/span>arrive in a place <\/span>where I can get food for sure, if not there are farms at which I can ask for some food. Anyway, I prepared my bicycle and left the school. Just after 50 meter<\/span>s<\/span> I stopped my mouth open. The creek<\/span> which I could easily pass two days ago turned into a river. <\/span>Dude, a real river. It is impossible to cross. Later when I talked to some farmers around I was told that all the other creeks were the same. <\/span>I\u2019m done. <\/span>The adventure of taking a whole loop along the Canal en<\/span>ded right here. It is an interesting place, famous for kite <\/span>surf<\/span>ing. <\/span>But, I was told that the best time for kite surfing was between November and April. It was June when I arrived there, outside tourism season. It was empty and nice. Not many places were open but Sole Beach Club was suitable for camping. It was a kite surfing area and the owner was a young German. His best friends were Turks in Germany. He showed me a good place to camp and I stayed there for 4 days. If I had arrived during the season I would definitely learn kite surfing at this place. <\/span>It wa<\/span>sn\u2019t me<\/span>a<\/span>nt to be. <\/span>This adventure is left for an<\/span>other corner<\/span>. He opened<\/span> this business before<\/span> the outbreak. But unfortunately, the outbreak<\/span> affected his business badly for 2 years. He had spent all his savings in this, so he doesn\u2019t want to quit. He is hoping for a good season from November 2021 to April 2022. I real<\/span>l<\/span>y admire such people a lot. I crossed Panama riding on the main road parallel to the Pacific coast. <\/span>To <\/span>go<\/span> directly<\/span> to Costa Ric<\/span>a, there is only one alternative<\/span> route till the town David. After David the road <\/span>continues towards Atlantic coast. It is also possible to continue along the Pacific coast to Costa Rica. But one of the important spots in Panama is the town <\/span>Boquete<\/span>. I would advise everyone traveling to Panama to visit this town. The dwellings of the town are just ordinary looking but its surrounding<\/span>s<\/span> and the nature is beautiful. Furthermore, the biggest coffee farms in Panama and also the farm selling the world<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s most expensive coffee beans are located here.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are <\/span>riding to <\/span>Topa<\/span>s<\/span> Hostel located near city entra<\/span>nce. The owner of the hostel, seeing my bicycle, smiles:<\/span><\/p>\n

It is hard to find these beans in such cafes. A cup of coffee made f<\/span>rom the beans of a famous farm <\/span>for example costs 40 USD or more. <\/span>I tasted coffee in various countries made form beans grown at different alti<\/span>t<\/span>udes and land varieties but cannot say that I\u2019m a coffee gourmand. The Geisha beans, doesn\u2019t matter they are nominated or the most expensive beans in the world, they are not my taste. After drinking our coffee, Pedro gave the rest of the beans in <\/span>the <\/span>package as a present. Enough for 4-5 cups of coffee worth of at least 100 USD. I said to the barista:<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Pardon me, can you grind this beans and put in a bag?<\/span><\/p>\n

– Mr. <\/span>Gurkan<\/span>, you have to put these coffee beans into <\/span>a <\/span>sealed bag right after grindin<\/span>g. Otherwise they\u2019ll l<\/span>ose their aroma.<\/span><\/p>\n

– You are right. But I don\u2019t own a grinder to use during my travel.<\/span> (I defini<\/span>t<\/span>e<\/span>ly will add this item in the upcoming months or years, but no need for now)<\/span><\/p>\n

Another day I rode on my bicy<\/span>c<\/span>le to the farm where the world\u2019s most expensive coffee beans were prod<\/span>uced and then to the other farmer<\/span>s whose phone numbers Pedro <\/span>gave me. Hmm, this farm lies at 1580 m altitude, 100 m lower than<\/span> the<\/span> farm from which I sent the beans to Turkey. The fi<\/span>rst owner of Elida <\/span>Estade<\/span> Cafe wa<\/span>s an American engineer who came to work for the Panama Channel construction at <\/span>the beginning of 1900s. \u00a0He bought a farm land in 1918 and started<\/span> to produce coffee. The most important feature of this region is that it is surrounded by volcanoes. Therefore, the soil also affects the aroma of the coffee bean. They start<\/span>ed<\/span> to produce Geisha beans in this farms at 1960s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geisha beans, as all the other coffee bean varieties, were brought to Panama from Ethiopia in 1930s. <\/span>A different aroma was developed<\/span> at the Geisha beans to be sent to a competition in 1995. At first, they thought the beans were spoiled but then<\/span> decided to send<\/span> those beans to the competition and won a prize. After that, the name of the farm became famous.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

At last, Geisha beans earned the most expensive beans title in 2019 in Japan, 500 g of Geisha beans sold for 1029 USD. You may drink a cup of coffee made by this high quality bean<\/span>s<\/span> produced in this farm for 80 USD. <\/span>Well, in my country the most expensive coffee bean is known as the coffee pooped by <\/span>Luwak<\/span>, 500 g<\/span> costs<\/span> 480 USD. There is a huge difference in between. From here I declare THE MOST EXPENSIVE COFFEE BEAN PRODUCED IN PANAMA is the one produced in this farm, and it is not fermented and pooped by an animal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Well, how come are these beans that expensive and why? The main difference of Geisha beans compared to the others, is their soft taste. It is an ideal taste for the coffee drinkers using sugar to mild the taste of the coffee, well if they like the aroma of course. Don\u2019t get be scared by the prices of these beans. Besides not all Geisha beans are produced in this region in Panama, also not all the beans are produce<\/span>d at this high quality standards, as in this farm<\/span> which is <\/span>a <\/span>hard process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every producer applies<\/span> a different procedure during <\/span>drying<\/span>. Therefore, you find various Geisha beans from different regions. Let me add that, I planted the coffee trees on May 20th 2021 with my own hand on a good fertile land 2 km ahead from the point I got the Geisha beans which I had sent from Columbia. I plan to export this high quality beans from Colombia earliest in 2025 or 2026 as my own brand. Before, let me introduce the Geisha beans I tested in another country.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The reasons why these beans are expensive in Panama and especially in this region are land, altitude, harvesting process and plus main coff<\/span>e<\/span>e importing countries don\u2019<\/span>t like the taste of these beans<\/span>. <\/span>The countries th<\/span>at like and import these beans <\/span>are Japan, South Korea, Singap<\/span>ore, Hong Kon<\/span>g, Australia and New Ze<\/span>a<\/span>land. The country which imports the best beans is Japan. Did this surprise me? No, not at all. Hearing the importing countries, I told the owner<\/span> of the coffee farm<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>I observed tha<\/span>t Asian people don\u2019t like strong<\/span> spirits like w<\/span>h<\/span>isky, v<\/span>od<\/span>ka and such coc<\/span>ktails during my<\/span> travels to Asia years ego. Even, they prefer soft non-alco<\/span>ho<\/span>lic drinks in their daily life. Therefore, Asian countries liked those beans. I don\u2019t think there <\/span>is<\/span>a<\/span> market for these beans in Europe or Middle East, either we never sold these beans in my shop.<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/span>Yes <\/span>Gurkan<\/span>, as you pointed out, the export destinations of these coffee beans are not Euro<\/span>pe or Middle East. Those countries<\/span> may import these expensive beans from other countries but not from Panama. Well, on the oth<\/span>er hand our amount production<\/span> is just enough to meet this market.<\/span><\/p>\n

I arrived at night to the place where the ferryboats to Bocas depart. Therefore, I was looking for a place to stay at. Well, there is a hotel but I arrived late and don\u2019t want to pay just to sleep in a hotel room. Let\u2019s first try the fire station than the police station options. I was not allowed to camp at the fire station neither at police station at the port. But I was told that the police station a<\/span>t the city center would allow me stay and I directly went<\/span> there. I was given a good place to stay at and on top<\/span> of it shower, food and the WIFI<\/span> password. <\/span>May god bless them.<\/span><\/p>\n

You may prefer speed boat for 6 USD or regular ferry boat for 5 USD. You may buy some snacks in the town before boarding the ferry boat. Not even tea or coffee<\/span> is sold on the board. The<\/span> ferry arrives in one and a half hours to the island. <\/span>I rode a short tour around while waiting to meet <\/span>Esin<\/span> who invited me to their b<\/span>oat. The island was pretty quiet, I liked it. I guess before C<\/span>ovid-19 it used to be very crowde<\/span>d.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other side of Bocas island lies the Bocas del Toro beach. It is a qui<\/span>e<\/span>t and nice area, I liked to camp <\/span>and ride on a swing<\/span>. I just haven<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t recognized how fast the time past, it was such an impressive place.<\/span><\/p>\n

The name of the restaurant is Yaris <\/span>Nori<\/span> (@<\/span>yarisnori<\/span>) and its owner Willy. I asked if I can camp on the beach in front of the restaurant and he immediately said yes. At night while I wa<\/span>s looking at the map in the tent<\/span>, I realized that this was not only a restaurant, at the same time a hotel. Normally he could say: \u201cwhat tent, stay at the hotel and pay for a room, but he didn\u2019t say that<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> In the morning while I was doing my sports outside the tent, he came next to me and asked: \u201cWould you like to drink a cup of coffee?\u201d. Then, we started to chat. W<\/span>e talked about the general situ<\/span>ation of Panama, how <\/span>Covid<\/span> outbreak<\/span> affected the tourism in this region, health and environmental issues, when his family came to this island, school life, <\/span>etc<\/span> etc. After that, before I left, Willy said:<\/span><\/p>\n

I was asked to make a health insurance with 50 000 USD limit and <\/span>2000 USD covering the quarantine<\/span> period. <\/span>For this 30 days limited insurance I was asked to pay 16<\/span>7 USD which is only valid if it is<\/span> done in their country.
